Anti-Imperialist International Women’s Alliance Joins the Movement in the New York City Area

New York, NY – On December 4th, 100 participants gathered for a dinner at the Solidarity Center, to hear more about the formation of the New York Metropolitan Area organizing committee of the International Women’s Alliance (IWA). The Alliance was born out of the Montreal International Women’s Conference, which took place this past August. The gathering was a buildup event for the March 8th International Working Women’s Day rally and the July 2011 IWA Congress which will take place in the Philippines.

The IWA aims to create a unified stance between all anti-imperialist women’s organizations in the metropolitan New York area. The alliance will coordinate local, regional and international campaigns around working women’s rights; promote mutual support and the sharing of resistance strategies; and mobilize women around the world in the struggle against imperialism, violence and capitalist globalization. “We recognize the need for IWA because we understand that as women, we bear the brunt of imperialism on an interpersonal, local, statewide, and international level. We need to unite and mobilize our sisters to create real change,” said Monica Moorehead of the Women’s Fightback Network.

The dinner began shortly after singer/songwriter, Taospuso, performed songs that reflected the urgency of anti-imperialist solidarity. Spoken word poet, Tahani Salaah, followed with two poems detailing the necessary role of women in ending wars of aggression and violence all over the world.

The night also served as a community forum, where 15 local organizing groups spoke about the struggles they are currently battling: the Woodlawn Cemetery strikes, the discontinuation of extended unemployment benefits, the heightened military presence in Korea, the conditions in Haiti after the earthquake, the women’s situation in Honduras, and human rights violations in Palestine. Connecting these local struggles to international causes demands a sense of urgency to end all forms of imperialism worldwide. “We go home to different communities, but as the International Women’s Alliance, we unite,” said Brenda Stokely, founder of the Millions Workers March.

The IWA Organizing Committee invites you to the 1st NYC International Women’s Alliance & International Working Women’s Day Rally Meeting: Saturday, January 8, 2010 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. / Solidarity Center – 55 W. 17th St. 5th floor, NY, NY/ Take the 4/5/6/B/D/F/N/Q/R to 14th St.
